_ pirates de la pantomima, mexico cityPiratas de la Pantomima invites local youth living on the streets to participate with artists and educators in efforts to address issues specific to this situation and to explore the use of public space. Incorporating the theatrical practices of Augusto Boal and combinations of dance and pantomime, youth compose corporeal choreographies that identify issues they confront daily and transform them into actions. These spontaneous expressions are performed on a portable stage, easily transported to various locations in the city. The project goal is complete autonomy on behalf of the youth participants, giving them the stage, tools, and support to continue this project. Youth in this project will be given stipends that include clothing, health services, and music.
The project's goals are to identify marginalized youth and empower them by developing tools that connect them to their bodies, using corporeal as a tool to explore and express complex issues. Because this project is positioned in the public space, it demands attnetion from the general public, posing questions of responsibility and interconnectedness of individuals and society at large. The question of kin comes into play as these youth, in general, abandoned by society, pose questions and invite dialogue with the greater public.
