_ arte en las calles, mexico city

“the conscious move out of ‘cultural spaces’ in the strictest sense of the word…posits that society as a whole culture- the site in which symbols and identity are forged, negotiated and contested.” -Diana Taylor

Lucia Villars and Rachel McIntire were awarded a grant from the Secretaria de Cultura of Mexico City to realize Arte en Las Calles. The project pilot offered a series of art workshops or homeless youth living in Plaza Zarco, located in the center of Mexico City. With the support of local and international artists, a series of activities in visual art, theater, sculpture, percussion and poetry were designed and facilitated for two weeks. Each workshop was designed with the intention to explore the shifting spaces we exist within and to honor the unique position of the individual and collective in this spacial continuum. The work and ideas of this pilot project were then shared in an open celebration in the Plaza. The space was temporarily transformed by video, music, and sculptural installations and an exhibit of photos, paintings and writings made in the workshops.
